Mr. Poyner is the Director of Bands at Currituck County High School, where he teaches Jazz Band, Concert Band, Marching Band, and Wind Ensemble. He has a Bachelors of Music in Music Theory & Composition from East Carolina University.

Mr. Poyner’s mission is to give each student tools that they can use to not just be better musicians, but to be better human beings. His philosophy is that music is not just something we do, but instead it is who we are. So because we are all music, we must strive for excellence in all that we do, while extending grace to ourselves and others when we miss the mark.

Ms. Alexis Lockhart became Currituck County High School’s Color Guard Director in May 2025 after two years leading Grassfield High School’s program. She has performed and taught in elite circuits including BOA, UIL Texas, TCGC, AIA, and WGI, earning accolades such as BOA Finalist, WGI World Championship Finalist, UIL State performer, and AIA Gold Medalist. Outside of guard, she serves as Worship Producer and Leader at Great Bridge UMC, teaches colorguard at Ocean Lakes High School, and enjoys reading, family time, and trips with her partner, Kris.
